Training and Development

Training and Development is one of the main functions of the human resource management management. Training is a systematic setup where employees are taught and instructed about the matters of technical knowledge related to their jobs. Training focuses on teaching employees how to use particular machines or how to do specific tasks to increase their efficiency.

Whereas, Development refers to the overall educational and holistic growth and maturity of people in managerial positions. The process of development is in relation to adaptability, attitudes, insights, leadership and human relations.

Training and Development Programmes

Training and development programmes are designed according to the requirements of the organisation. These programmes are generally classified into two types:

  1. on the job programmes
  2. off the job programmes

Need for Training:

Every organization should provide training to all the employees irrespective of their skills and qualifications.

There is need of training because of following reasons:

1. Environmental changes:

Automation, computerization and mechanization, have resulted in many changes that require trained staff possessing enough skills. The organization should train the employees to enrich them with the latest technology and required adequate knowledge.

2. Organizational complexity:

With modern diver­sification, technological upgradation, and inventions most of the organizations have become very complex. This has aggravated the problems of coordination. So, in order to cope up with these problems training has become mandatory.

3. Human relations:

Every management needs to maintain very good human relations for better results, ans this made training as one of the basic conditions to deal with human problems.

4. Change in the job assignment:

Training is also necessary when the existing employee is transferred to another department or pro­moted to the higher level. Training is also required to educate the old employees with new techniques.

Types of Training-

1. Instructor-led training

This is one of the traditional type of employee training which occurs in a classroom with a teacher presenting is classroom. This can be a highly effective method of employee training for complex topics. Instructors can answer the specific employee questions or direct them to further resources. 

2. eLearning

eLearning relies on online videos, courses, and tests to deliver employee training. Employees can do their training anuwhere with internet access. It is one of the easiest types of employee training to roll out to larger populations. With interactive activities, games, activities and tests or even gamified components, it can go a long way towards keeping your employees engaged with the training.

3. Simulation employee training

Simulation training is provided through a computer or virtual reality device. Despite the initial costs for producing that technology or software however, this training can be a necessary option for employees in riskier or high-stakes fields. You will often see this type of training for doctors or pilots.

4. Hands-on training

This includes any experiential training which focus on the individual needs of the employee or worker. It is conducted directly on the job. Hands-on training can help employees fit perfectly into their current or upcoming role, while enhancing their current skills.

5. Coaching or mentoring

They share similar qualities to hands-on training but in this type of employee or worker training focus is on the relationship between an employee and a more experienced professional, such as their a coach, supervisor, or a veteran employee.

6. Lecture-style training

This type of training is important for giving information to a large number of employee, lecture-style training can be an invaluable resource for communicating required information quickly.

7. Group discussions and activities

This provide trainig to group of employees, group discussions and activities that can provide the perfect training option. It allows multiple employees to train at once, in an environment that better fits their current groups or departments.

8. Role-playing

This is somewhere similar to role-playing specifically asks employees to work through one aspect of their jobs in a controlled scenario. In this employees will be asked to consider different points-of-view and think on their feet as they work through the role-playing activity.

9. Management-specific activities

These activities are just that—employee training that’s focused on the needs of managers. They may include simulations, team-building exercises, brainstorming activities, focused eLearning or role-playing on management best practices.

10. Case studies or other required reading

Some topics can be understood by readings. Case studies can provide a quick way for employees to learn about real workplace issues. Employees can read through these at their home or while working in a team-building session with other employees.
